Hello there! I am a medical student who will post ideas about the future of healthcare.
The problem with centralized healthcare
Too often, people come to receive healthcare when it is often too late. Have a heart attack, go to the cardiologist where he will place a stent and manage you from that point forwards with drugs. Get cancer, go to a oncologist, where he will place you on chemotherapy in order to kill your cancer tissue, but there is no guarantee of success. Too often, we offer the solution to the problem, but we must stop the problem before it arises. Modern medicine is very good at solving these problems, but with the healthcare shortages of labor and financial resources, we must come up with new solutions to prevent these terminal diseases from developing in the first place. These solutions must be addressed by the population at large, and in order for it to be successful, cultural and societal forces will have to modify individual behavior to be more in line with long term health. Today, we have many forces acting against our favor. There is a lack of healthy nutrition available to the general public. People are generally sedentary, and public transportation makes it less feasible to get adequate physical activity. For those who already have medical conditions, there is an abundance of pharmaceutical prescriptions, that results in unfortunate side effects and long term consequences. There is environmental pollution that is hurting the development of healthy individuals, such as microplastics and chemicals in the atmosphere. The solutions to these problems are complex, but with the medical literature, I propose few solutions that would be very effective. In this blog, I will summarize these ideas on how we can continue the advancement of health. Every individual needs to act on his or her behalf in order for this change to be effective.
